Crowns poured with this housing were thin, flush with the brick and without a drip edge, so water runs down the face of the stack instead of dripping clear, and enough freeze-thaw cycles later there are hairline cracks letting water into the top of the masonry. The second is a flue that is far too large for the appliance now venting into it, because the boiler went from oil to gas and nobody resized the flue. That makes the gases cool and condense on the way up, and the acidic condensate attacks the liner from the inside. Both are visible on a camera scan and neither is visible from the hearth.
