Chimney and duct service in Middlesex County

Middlesex is the part of our service area where dryer vent work outnumbers chimney work, and the reason is the layout of the housing rather than the county. The laundry sits away from an exterior wall far more often here, so the duct has to travel across the basement with several elbows before it gets outside — and that is the arrangement that fills with lint fastest.

The short answer

We clear the whole run from both ends, check the exterior hood, and show you what came out. Chimney sweeping and inspection run alongside it as normal.

What we find on these jobs

On the duct side: long runs with four or five elbows, lint packed at every one of them, and a flexible transition hose crushed flat behind the machine because somebody pushed it back to the wall. Very occasionally we find a run that terminates in a crawl space or a soffit rather than through an exterior wall, which is an installation defect and a moisture problem as much as a lint one. On the chimney side, the older waterfront housing brings back salt on caps and driven rain on flashing, on narrower flues that are less forgiving of water than newer ones.

There was a lot of shaking in the chimney at night because the cap had come loose. They took it out and replaced it with a safe locking model, fixed the broken tile below, cleaned up the mess, and checked the…

The formation of water stains around the fireplace was prevented by repairing the flashing. The sealing seems to be well-done and secure. At last, weatherproofing feels solid. Thorough focus on detail.

Questions from Middlesex County

Why does my dryer take two cycles in a house this new?

Almost always the length of the run rather than the age of the house. Twenty-five or thirty feet of duct with four or five elbows is ordinary here, and every elbow is a place lint stops moving.

Can you do the chimney and the dryer vent on the same visit?

Yes, and here it is usually the sensible booking. One trip, one set of drop cloths, and you get both reports at the same time.

How do I check the vent myself before calling?

Run the dryer and go outside to the hood. If you cannot feel a strong flow of warm air coming out of it, the run is restricted somewhere between the machine and the wall.
